Peer Portfolio Critique
I did not know for sure if we were supposed to do our critiques in a blog post or if we were supposed to just leave them on comments, so I decided to do both. I am critiquing Jiselle Tejera. I loved the use of a the background on her home page. I felt like it really added a nice texture to her page. I think she did a great job on all of the images she shared. My favorites were from her illustration shoot. I think they did a really fantastic job of telling a story and sharing an opinion. The only thing I would change about her profile is the copyright to Adam Kant and possibly try adding the background from the home page to all the other pages, but overall I thought it looked fantastic!

Portfolio
I was actually really excited about this assignment. I have been needing to make a portfolio for awhile and this gave me the kick in the butt that I needed to get it done. Here is the link to my portfolio.

Illustration
1/100 f/4.8 ISO: 720
This photo would be used to in an editorial piece that discusses veterans lives and death after they come home from serving our country. It would go through and discuss the benefits they receive and the things that could be improved upon.
When I was getting ready to do this shoot I wanted to find different aspects of veterans lives after they serve their country. I ended up really liking this shot because it shows that this veteran lived a long life after his service, but it also shows aspects of his death. I tried some other angles and positions for things like the flag and the rose, but I thought that this ended up being the most compelling. I chose to shot this later in the evening with a heavy cloud cover because I liked the way the clouds diffuse the light to make the brighter colors pop.
Physical: It is clear this photo is taken in a cemetery. The American flag leads to the assumption that the cemetery is located in the United States.
Psychological: The primary emotion in this photo at a first glance may look like it is sorrow. There definitely is a strong sense of sadness and grief in this image, but I also wanted to portray the respect the mourner had for their loved veteran. I chose to include the red rose which is said to symbolize respect and are given to those who have been courageous.
Social: The social context of the photo is the opinion of society on veterans and how we thank them for their service for our country when they return even after they have passed.
Cultural: Due to the American flag and the clearly marked headstone that says Army Special Forces Airborne, there is an automatic cultural tie for American citizen. This is really the hardest hitting context for the image. I tried to pull focus to the cultural context of this image by using the contrast of colors to emphasize the American flag. The whole purpose of the shot for the editorial is to draw attention to the lives and deaths of veterans so it was very important to me that the American culture was evident in the image.
Temporal: The date on the headstone gives you a general idea of the time period. It is clear that it is after 2014. The lack of other mourners around and the even grass regrowth around the headstone show that some time has passed since his death. The more relaxed body language of the mourner shows that his loved ones have made peace with his death. I think that from these subtleties the viewers of the image can make an inference about the time this photo was taken. It is clear the photo was taken during the daytime.

Feature News
St. George Street Sculptures-
One of my favorite things about St. George is the amount of art there is in the town. I think that people have taken a lot of steps to make St. George a beautiful place and one of the ways the city showcases its beauty is with art. Many of the streets are lined with sculptures, I decided to make this the focus of my feature story.

News Package
I went to An Evening of Dixie for my News Package project. I wanted to talk to some of the Alumni about their opinions of DSU's new identity.

Hard News
I joined team caucus for my hard news assignment, and to be honest I thought it was very difficult to get nice shots out of it. I know it was not quite as bad as a press conference, but it also wasn't as nice to shoot as an Entrada golf course would have been. Unfortunately I had to work during the golf tournament, so I was left with the caucus for this assignment. It was actually a great reality check as to what the day to day job of a photojournalist is like. I think that this assignment really taught me that you have to be very observant as a photojournalist because there is a fine line between getting a creative and interesting shot and telling the truth of the story. I struggled with this both in shooting and editing. Something that may seem simple like pulling the zoom up can make the room seem much fuller and change the truth of the story. I really wanted my focus with this post to be telling the true story of the caucus that I attended.

Portrait Redux
For this shoot I used a north facing window as my main source of light. I filled shadows with a white piece of paper and some tin foil. I want to give a big thank you to my models for not getting to frustrated with me as I tilted their faces around endlessly trying to get the lighting the way that I wanted it. I think that doing this assignment again was very beneficial to me as I am learning about lighting. It really helped me see how many different things can be manipulated while shooting and by the end I think I was starting to get the hang of it.

Editing Josh's Take
It was strange editing someone else's photos. I think it made me realize that there are so many different ways of perceiving a photograph. There were things that I would change that could very easily change the feelings of the overall photograph. When you edit your own photos you go into them knowing what you want to correct, and what feelings you want to keep in the image, but when it is someone else's photo you don't have that insight to their intentions. I hope that I was able to maintain Josh's vision while I edited his pictures.
